Breeding Japanese koi carp is an inseparable part of my life. That is why I decided to devote myself to breeding these living gems professionally.
My name is Ľudovít Šimčák and I have been dedicated to breeding KOI carp and pond-related matters for more than 15 years. Breeding Japanese KOI carp is an inseparable part of my life, and therefore I decided to pursue it professionally.
Like everyone else, I was inexperienced and lacked information about breeding these fish. The first mistakes and disappointments came, but by acquiring new information and experience, I began to improve.
I started breeding KOI carp while still a student. My first pond was only a few hundred liters in volume and I kept euro KOI carp in it. The first winter came and I found out that the pond was shallow, so I had to move the fish indoors. In spring, I immediately expanded the pond to 5,000 liters of water. The depth of the pond was about 1.2 m, which should have been sufficient for overwintering. I made the filter myself and used only some thin black foil from a garden store…
As a student, I did not have a high budget. I thought it would be sufficient like this. It lasted for about a year, but the water was not according to my expectations, and no matter what I tried, something always needed adjustment.
I realized that the pond needs to be built properly with quality foil and filtration, or to fill it in and create an ornamental rock garden instead.
The passion for breeding KOI carp was stronger, so the decision came for a complete reconstruction of the pond, including a shaft for housing the filtration. Of course, I already had much more knowledge and experience, so digging and concreting began…
Due to limited space, I now have a main pond with a volume of 30 m3 and a stream approximately 13 m long. I keep original Japanese KOI carp in it, most of which I personally selected in Japan. For fish breeding, I also have additional ponds with volumes of 10 m3 and 80 m3.
I also have a winter rearing facility and a quarantine room with 11 tanks ranging in size from 1.3 m3 to 6 m3 intended for KOI carp, sturgeons, etc. In summer, I also use above-ground tanks outdoors. I currently have 4 of them with volumes from 4 m3 to 8 m3.
